From the first patent for an invisible hinge to the present: the history of Salice
Salice was established in Cantù in 1926 when its founder, Arturo Salice, decided to open a hardware store. At the end of the 1950s, the company changed direction. In a new factory, Arturo started his own line of furniture hardware and, in 1957, filed for the world's first patent for an invisible self-closing hinge. The invention opened up new and significant market opportunities for the Salice brand allowing it, in a short time, to establish itself as an industry leader both nationally and internationally. In the meantime, Arturo's sons Giorgio and Luciano also came into the business, a joint-stock company now named Arturo Salice S.p.A. The company emerged on the international scene and, in 1971, its first branches opened in Neckarwestheim (Germany) and Antibes (France). In 1975, official headquarters moved from Cantù to Novedrate, also in the Como area. The operation was located on an vast area of 240,000 square meters of greenery, while the factory occupies 60,000 square meters. At the same time, the company moved even further towards internationalization, creating new branches throughout the world. In the 1980s and 90s, Salice opened new offices in the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States. The brand also has a presence in Asia with offices in Hong Kong and Shanghai since 2015. Starting in 2000, Salice expanded its commercial and manufacturing operations, acquiring ADAR S.p.A. (today Salice GUIDE S.p.A. specializing in the production of metal slides and drawers) and, in 2010, BORTOLUZZI SISTEMI S.p.A., manufacturer of sliding systems.
