To cultivate vertically!
Jardins de Babylone produced a new creation and devoted particular attention to urban agriculture at the ‘Jardins Jardin’ exhibition in the Tuileries in 2011, in the 8th arrondissement of Paris: The urban vegetable garden in bamboo. In Asia, bamboo scaffolding is used for the construction of buildings. Using this idea, they are able to create an urban vegetable garden. It was made up of several very specific elements:
A total surface area of 50m2
The use of 90 bamboo canes, 3m long for the construction of the structure.
Each bamboo cane was arranged horizontally and has openings to accommodate the plants.
Each planted bamboo cane was previously sealed by fine gravel drainage. It is a layer of hydrophilic felt and a porous watering system.
The plants are thus irrigated several times during the day thanks to a studied program. Like a closed circuit, the overflow of water is recovered in a tank serving as a filling tank for the structure. The fish provide nutrient for plants.
• The arrangement of both vegetable plants (courgettes, melons, patty pan squashes, cucumbers, tomatoes, strawberries,) and aromatic and medicinal plants (helichrysum, lemon balm, mint, chives, red basil, thyme, rosemary …).
