Forzon skylights make a dynamic contribution to the indoor climate. Natural daylight is used as much as possible and ventilation through the skylights provides refreshment in summer so that energy consumption for cooling is unnecessary. The skylights are made of custom extruded aluminium profiles to preserve the historic character of the building. The ventilation hatches are made of slim profiles integrated into the glazed roof system. Context: The Gare Maritime is a former freight railway station, built in 1907 and completely renovated 110 years later. The Gare Maritime is a zero energy building. No fossil fuels are used for heating or cooling throughout the complete building. The building envelope has been optimised to minimise energy losses while maximising natural light. Double insulating and solar control glazing contribute to circularity and reduced energy demand. In terms of ventilation, cooling and lighting, the latest state-of-the-art technical installations have been provided. After receiving an honourable mention in the Circular Building category, Gare Maritime also won the Belgian Building Award - Utility Building.
