Description

Vibro piles are formed in the ground. A steel casing fitted with a baseplate is driven to the required depth. This construction ensures that the pile has a relatively large load-bearing capacity. Once the casing has been driven to depth, a reinforcement cage is inserted and the casing is filled with concrete. The casing is then vibrated or driven out of the ground, while the baseplate remains behind. The steel casing is then used to form the next pile. Properties of vibro piles Vibro piles offer flexibility in the design phase, since the casing and reinforcement can be replaced or the length adjusted with relative ease (in contrast to concrete piles). This is beneficial, as the design and construction phases of projects are increasingly being carried out simultaneously. Vibro piles can absorb greater compression and tension forces than prefabricated concrete piles. Vibro piles require virtually no storage space at the construction site, since the casing is repeatedly reused and the pile is cast in the ground. Vibro piles are not readily suited to use in locations with weak peat strata, as concrete can leak in these layers. Nor are vibro piles suitable for driving the head of the pile below ground level. Driving the steel casing generates considerable noise, although this can to some extent be limited by fitting an acoustic jacket.
